What is a timing point?

Timing points are visits at bus stops that a bus is measured against for whether it’s on schedule or not. Timing status is meant to define whether a stop is enforced as a point of reference to determine if a bus is on schedule or not.

Why are timing points important to operators?

Operators are able to use timing points to monitor the efficiency of specific services across the entirety of their network which assists with future network planning and audit.

How are timing points classified?

  • NaPTAN defines a default timing status on a stop.
  • TransXChange files can be configured to define the timing status on a timing link between two stops.

Passenger uses the timing status from timing links in TransXChange first, where these are not present, we fall back to the default for the stop status defined in NaPTAN. If the stop is not defined in NaPTAN, and no timing status is defined in the TransXChange, the default status of Other will be applied.

The classification of timing points determines how they are handled by Passenger to appear on timetable pages in Apps and on Websites.

How are Timing Points displayed on timetables?

On timetable page on web customers have the ability to toggle between ‘Major stops', which are classified as major based on the timing status or 'All stops’ which includes every stop serviced on a journey. App timetable views are setup to display either Major or all stops, please contact us if you would like to change this.

The below table displays how Passenger handles timetable information on timing points and displays this to customers. Operators can use their TransXChange production software to change the timing status for a visit, by stop, which in turn dictates how they are displayed on timetable pages to customers.
